Brainsport Times Sept. 13, 2017

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Queen City Marathon over the weekend! Hopefully everyone is recovering well, and enjoying some time off.

In this week's Times we're going to learn more about a fun event coming up this weekend! The second annual Broadway Fit Fest, presented by RYDE YXE, gets underway Saturday morning; and there's tons of action you won't want to miss out on.

To learn more about the event we're going to speak with Shaina Lynden, owner of RYDE YXE Cycle Studios.

So, let's get to it!

Q&A with Shaina Lynden

Tara: Let's start by learning how Broadway Fit Fest came to be. What were the motivating factors in bringing this event together?

Shaina: During last summer's construction on Broadway Ave, the Broadway BID and businesses in the area were looking for events to help keep people interested and coming to Broadway. We thought that it would be great to organize an event with different local fitness disciplines and hold it in the Victoria School Park and down 11th Street. We wanted the event to be non-profit with all of the proceeds going to Camp Easter Seals (last year). We were fortunate to raise more than $2500 at last year’s event, and donate that directly to the cause. We knew we wanted to make Fit Fest an annual event and bring it back bigger and better!

We are so happy to have the opportunity to bring some of Saskatoon's fitness community together to host a fun-filled day of fitness and gathering. We are also excited to announce that this year’s charity of choice is KidSport Saskatoon, providing opportunity for all kids to play!

Tara:
What can participants expect from this year's event? Are there any changes from last year?

Shaina: Instead of being held off Broadway, 2017 Fit Fest will be in the 600 and 700 block of Broadway Ave. This year participants can expect a range of classes from yoga, crossfit, pilates, bootcamps, kettlebell, kickboxing, and of course, Ryde! We have also brought in a group seminar aspect to this year’s event. Seminars of note are: Movement Literacy, how well do you really move from Craven Sport Services; how to properly supplement an active lifestyle from Popeyes Supplements; and a seminar on natural products and essential oils by Saje Natural Wellness.

Our biggest changes from last year participants will notice is how much bigger the event has become. We have an array of vendors (not including the multiple fitness disciplines attending), local Broadway shops and businesses opening their doors with great specials to Fit Fest participants, and an all around amazing community experience!

Tara: Who is the event open to? Is there a charge to take part? And, what are the details on times and different activities?

Shaina: Broadway Fit Fest is open to everyone ages 15 and older (15 -18-years-old need to have their parents consent). All ages are welcome for family yoga presented by One Yoga at 2:15 p.m. through the end of the day. All you need to do is fill out a simple participant questionnaire at registration. The cost is your $20 donation to KidSport which can be paid at the registration table or in advance at rydeyxe.ca or on our app. You will receive your pink VIP wristband and you are ready to sign up for as many classes as you like. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and classes start at 9 a..m sharp and run until 3 p.m. Each class will be 30 minutes, which will give participants a taste of what each studio has to offer. We will kick off the day at 9 a.m. with a RYDE class. Other classes include: kickboxing by Bridge City Fitness, yoga by One Yoga, and total-body-training boot camp by JB Performance. A full list of classes can be found on our Facebook event page called, Ryde YXE presents the 2nd Annual Broadway Fit Fest. Participants can also find the full schedule at the registration table on the day of the event.

Tara: What are you most excited about for Fit Fest this year?

Shaina: The  theme for the event is community over competition. In fact Lululemon is doing a limited run of shirts available to the early go getters for pre order. We are so excited to share in this event with so many other disciplines and neighbours while supporting kids through the gift of sport! Let's celebrate #thesweatlifeyxe

Tara: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Shaina: Don't forget to check out the prize table where you can get one entry for $5 or three entries for $10. Take your chance to win some amazing prizes from all of the vendors/studios and gyms!
